Scenario
Two religious young women engage in a game of cat and mouse in a strange man’s house. “No generative al was used in the making of this film,” I saw seven films at TIFF this year, and Hugh Grant got my vote for best film (which also got my vote).
But Grant was far more discerning and critical of religion than expected
I was very impressed with how he got in touch with his dark side in the HBO miniseries THE UNDOING, but here he’s a departure from his role in the schizophrenic romantic comedy Dimensions. Her co-stars Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East are excellent in their roles as two Mormon missionaries who believe they are visiting someone who wants to convert to the Mormon religion.
So Grant begins a game of cat and mouse that tests her faith
Realizing that he is really interested in a debate about religion, not conversion, they try to leave but find themselves trapped. For a horror film, the film is solid, but doesn’t reach the extremes of similar claustrophobic horror films like FUNNY GAMES (original) and SPEAK NO EVIL (2022 version).
The result is refreshingly unconventional
My only criticism is that the choice of Mormonism as a religion is a bit calculated. In short: If you’ve ever enjoyed a Hugh Grant movie and want to see the pinnacle of his career, watch this one.
Side note: There was a question and answer session
Not since I saw Allison Janney in 2017’s I TONYA was I so sure about a Best Actor Oscar nomination for a TIFF film. After the movie, I got compliments from several people as I walked out of the movie asking a question: “Has Richard Dawkins influenced me?” Check out our list of exciting new films from this year’s film festivals, including Venice, TIFF, the New York Film Festival and more.
